The Impossible Has Already Happened brings together two nation’s stories of water amid a global climate crisis. Choreographers Jennifer Mascall (Canada) and Claire O’Neil (NZ) investigate the power and purpose of water. Water sustains, nourishes, disrupts and dazzles our planet. It draws parallels to our flowing lives, to stagnated situations, and presence of being. With a sense of urgency, this work highlights our precious natural resource and all it can achieve.
“ For years, artists globally have been tickling our collective consciousness, urging the world to wake up to the perils of impending climate change. Footnote’s latest co-production, The Impossible Has Already Happened, with Canadian dance company MascallDance is a discourse on the precious taonga, water and the way in which “the story of our lives in this world is changing”. But the work is no earnest polemic – instead the two choreographers, Claire O’Neil from Aotearoa and Canadian Jennifer Mascall translate the inherent qualities of water into a distinctive movement style that is constantly mobile. Each dancer has a solo which is revelatory in defining their various identities. As an ensemble the companies merged effortlessly”
Review by Jenny Stevenson 02nd Apr 2023, Theatreview NZ
A 60 minute love story to water and our relationships with it, The Impossible Already Happened the Western Canadian tour will include six dancers with narration by performer Tobias Macfarlane as the voice of the water. The piece is a cohesive collection of many different personal stories that take audiences on a journey that provokes people to consider their own relationship with water and what they are considering doing themselves since…. The Impossible Has Already Happened. This collaboratively created work ponders the ways we survive, the tiny gestures we make like drops in the ocean, and the stories we tell ourselves to go on.

Rising to international acclaim with a distinct country-pop shimmer reminiscent of iconic predecessor Shania Twain, Medicine Hat native and Nashville-based MacKenzie Porter’s sound knows no borders.
Making an introductory statement with her critically acclaimed, chart-dominating, six-week U.S. #1 Dustin Lynch duet “Thinking ‘Bout You,” Porter now returns with lightning-like summer jam “Chasing Tornadoes,” teasing what’s to come on her full-length Big Loud Records debut due later this year.
Making her mark with standout hits such as “Pickup,” which earned her a 2023 CMT Music Awards nomination for Breakthrough Female Video of the Year and best-known head-bobber “These Days,” her "mesmerizing vocals and hook-driven songs'' (Billboard) continue to spark headline-worthy moments and accolades.
Standing alone as the only female in her category nominated for Favorite Country Song at the 2022 American Music Awards, the 2023 MusicRow Discovery Artist of the Year has additionally earned seven CCMA nominations, including a nod for Entertainer of the Year. A trailblazer in her field, Porter is the first female this century to have five #1 songs at Canadian country radio, claiming her first crossover Top 10 at Canadian pop radio with “These Days (Remix)” – the first since 2003 for a Canadian country artist.
The triple threat is a member of CMT’s elite Next Women of Country Class of 2021, previously starred as an actress in cult-followed sci-fi television series Travelers and has toured the globe opening for Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Walker Hayes, Jordan Davis, Brad Paisley, Chris Lane, Dallas Smith, and Rascal Flatts.

Rugged, raspy and reserved, JJ Shiplett is a true artist in every sense of the word. Unapologetically himself, the Alberta born singer-songwriter and performer is both bold in range and musical creativity and has a passion and reverence for the art of music and performance that has captured the attention of music fans across the country. The forthcoming debut album “Something To Believe In” is an impressive and emotive collection which includes fan favourites “Higher Ground”, “Darling, Let’s Go Out Tonight” and the title track “Something To Believe In” from Shiplett’s EP(The E.P.), and will be released in January 2017 via HALO Entertainment Group/Warner Music Canada.
Recorded in Toronto and Nashville fans can expect to hear Shiplett’s signature gravelly and soulful sound front and centre on each and every album track. The self-penned album represents Shiplett’s impressive vocal range, songwriting and effortlessly tracks the last two years of his story. Rugged, raspy and reserved, Shiplett is often compared to Bruce Springsteen and Chris Stapleton, and has been praised by the public, media and the industry across the country – many going on record to say that he is the “one to watch” (Saskatoon Star Phoenix).
With a passion and reverence for the art of music and performance, Shiplett spent the earlier part of the year as direct support for multi-platinum entertainer Johnny Reid on the 47 show, 35 cities “What Love Is All About Tour”. He quickly gained momentum with the release of “The E.P.” - a perfect testament to his range and depth as an artist, and a record that couples outstanding songwriting, showcases the Alberta-born artist’s musical creativity, and celebrates his honest lyricism backed by his powerful and unique voice.

This is the final workshop event in a series of three for the Community Action Lab sponsored by the City of Medicine Hat.
Since our initial event in February 2023, the Local Action Team has been engaging with Strong Towns in virtual coaching sessions, discussions of key lessons, and exploring how to apply the Strong Towns approach to the Medicine Hat area. This public event will cover crucial themes about financial solvency for cities — important information as Hatters work together towards ongoing prosperity and livability.
Rent is skyrocketing. Buying a home is out of the question for people at many stages of life. To ensure a better future for Medicine Hat, we’ve got to make sure future residents can find a home here. The answer to the housing crisis won’t be found at the federal or provincial level. The answer to the housing crisis is right here in Medicine Hat. Let’s discover it together.
