Rocky Mountain High

7:30 PM| 401 1st Street SE

It was twenty five years ago John Denver was tragically taken from this world, but his music and legacy live on!

Rocky Mountain High celebrates John’s music as it was first arranged by his longtime friend, conductor and arranger, Lee Holdridge. Over the past four years, Canadian recording artist Rick Worrall, has worked very closely with Mr. Holdridge to painstakingly rebuild John’s  library of songs to allow this material to be performed as it was at the height of his career. Together with his brother Steve who has toured with the likes of Tom Cochrane, Amy Sky, and Kim Stockwood to name a few, they head up an Allstar lineup of some of Canada’s best musicians, who stay true to John’s musicianship and style.

Hear what the critics say…

“The Way a tribute should be done!”  ~ Kelowna Daily Courier

“Simply magical! John would be so proud!” ~ CJNU  Radio Winnipeg

“Awesome!! A great celebration to a music icon, Bravo!”  ~ Calgary Herald

A great show for all ages, join the fun and sing and clap along to many of your favourites, Take Me Home Country Roads, Sunshine on My Shoulders, Calypso and many more.  Thanks to movies and commercials, not to mentioned many of today’s artists covering John’s songs…everyone will want to participate!

Becoming the Beatles

7:30 PM| 401 1st Street SE

THE LIVE MUSICAL DOCUMENTARY

This theatrical event weaves together over 300 stunning projections, 20 live songs and fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. Yale-educated musician/storyteller Haley Marie orchestrates these elements as she guides you through the history-making events and heartbreaking moments of the Beatles.

With years of research and musical analysis at her fingertips, Haley Marie delivers a world-class performance about four lads, how they rose to incredible fame, their connection to classical music and how they changed the world forever.

Becoming the Beatles is definitely not a tribute act. It’s a show about four boys: one born during an air raid, one who had to reverse the strings on his guitar to make sense of it, one who stayed up late practicing with tears in his eyes and another who couldn’t read or write until he was eight. It’s also the story of a visionary young producer who was desperate to find his way out of the ‘comedy division’ at Parlophone records.

Haley Marie’s in-depth analysis reveals the re-awakening of a world devastated by war, the genius of oppressed musicians in the Deep South, the unexpected inspiration from the classical greats and the heartbreak from the death of the band’s biggest idol.

Hear first-hand how the band used flour and water to fasten their logo to the side of their van en route to Germany. How that same band was turned down by 80% of the English recording market yet defied the odds to become the most successful musical group in history.

Scarlett Butler

7:30 PM| 401 1st Street SE

Scarlett Butler is a new Canadian music duo comprised of Troy Kokol and Joni Delaurier. But ask anyone in the Canadian country music industry and they would be known better individually for crafting songs you have probably heard on the radio.

After a decade of writing songs for country artists (300+ songs over the last decade) with and for artists like Shane Yellowbird, Brett Kissel, Tenille Townes, The Higgins, Mike Plume, and others, this talented duo stands on a solid foundation of well-crafted songs backed up by a soul-warming blend of familial harmonies.

As recording artists, both have released solo records with Kokol earning himself solo nods for Male Artist of the Year at the Indigenous Music Awards in 2018. Forming a duo is an evolution from the songwriting rounds they have played over the years, where they would sing harmonies on each other’s songs and records, and the million times they were told, “you should start a band”.

Jake's Gift

7:00 PM| 401 1 Street SE

Jake’s Gift is the moving story of a WW2 veteran’s reluctant return to Juno Beach, written and performed by Julia Mackey, directed by Dirk Van Stralen.

A Canadian WW2 veteran reluctantly returns to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably, the wartime death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and personalizes the story behind one soldier’s grave.

In June 2004, Julia Mackey traveled to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. It was one of the most moving and powerful experiences of her life. During that week long journey, Julia interviewed dozens of Canadian, British and American WW2 veterans who had returned for the ceremonies. For many, it was their first time back to France since the war. The stories they shared with Julia and her own life-long interest in Remembrance Day inspired the development of the play. In August 2006, the first draft of Jake’s Gift received a workshop performance at the Sunset Theatre’s Exploration Series in Wells, BC.

Jake's Gift will be presented on the Esplanade Main Stage, Sunday October 29, 2023 at 7:00PM.

This event is FREE entry.
