The Nutcracker

7:30 PM| 401 1 Street SE

The Nutcracker is back!

This timeless traditional Holiday ballet is returning to Medicine Hat. Jeunesse Classique Ballet is bringing their production of the Nutcracker to the Esplanade, December 1-3, 2023.

The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara who receives the gift of a Nutcracker doll from her favourite uncle, the mysterious and magical toymaker Herr Drosselmeyer, at a party in her home. As the party winds down and she goes to bed, the Nutcracker doll comes to life to lead the toy soldiers in a great battle with the mice led by the vicious Mouse King. The battle rages on and the Nutcracker is killed by the Mouse King. Clara in turn dispatches the Mouse King with her shoe. Drosselmeyer sees her sorrow and brings the Nutcracker back to life, but this time as a real Prince. The Nutcracker and Clara dance and he whisks her away through the snow to the Magical Kingdom of the sweets where they are entertained by amazing dances from around the world. She awakes back in her house, her beloved Nutcracker returned to a doll. Was it all a dream? You decide.

Jeunesse Classique Ballet has performed the Nutcracker every season in its 36 years. We hold open auditions in our tour cities and partner with local dancers to supplement our touring cast. This year, we are proud to say we have the largest local cast we have ever had! Over 30 Medicine Hat dancers will be performing the bulk of the Corps de Ballet and several soloist roles.

Jeunesse Classique Ballet is a not for profit and charitable arts organization dedicated to the preservation, promotion and presentation of classical ballet. We do this by staging two full length ballet productions drawn the classical repertoire. In our history, we have performed The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Coppelia, Giselle and many others. We are excited to return to Medicine Hat and perform once again on the stage of the beautiful Esplanade.

The Great Disconnect

1:00 PM| 414 1 Street SE

This screening is at the Medicine Hat Public Library.

We are living in a time that has been described as the age of loneliness. Despite Western advances in technology, living conditions, education and healthcare, we, as a society, are isolating ourselves from one another, and because of this, facing a health crisis that affects all ages, genders, races, and cultures.

But how have we become so disconnected?  And what can we do to change the status quo and fulfill our potential for health and well-being?

Join wellness expert Tamer Soliman as he journeys through North American cities to meet with local citizens, community activists, and leading authorities on social, economic, and urban planning to discover the true factors that have profound and lasting impacts, not only on our health, but the health of the communities in which we live.

This timely documentary invites us to reflect on the relationships we have with those around us and raises the question: is it possible to overcome our modern culture of disconnectedness and rediscover how truly essential we are to one other?

Mahoney and Friends

7:30 PM| 401 1 Street SE

After 2 1/2 decades, Mahoney has established themselves as a mainstay of the Medicine Hat business and entertainment industry. The duo played their first show at Medicine Hat College in January 2000, with thousands of events to follow. They have performed all across the country, on stages big and small, and 10 years ago decided it was time to tackle Medicine Hat's largest, and most prestigious stage. The Esplanade is the pinnacle of local music venues and and that first show was a tremendous success, warranting an annual performance. Mahoney wanted to share the experience of playing such a phenomenal show with the finest musicians intown. Mahoney and Friends was born of a desire to showcase elite local talent, with the finest production, in the greatest venue.

Today, almost a decade later, Mahoney and Friends has proven itself to be one of the finest yearly shows around. Similar to the style that has put Mahoney on the map, Mahoney and Friends assembles an eclectic collection of fun, recognizable and crowd friendly songs, accommodating all age groups. You’ll hear songs you’ve known your whole life with a clever twist that you can only get from Mahoney. Bring your kids, bring your grandparents, and everyone in between, for this amazing annual show that gets better and better every year!
